The Choctaw Nation Genealogy Department assists individuals who have discovered ancestry information from the Dawes Commission Rolls in verifying their lineage for Tribal Membership.

Eligibility

  • Open for any individual to request genealogy assistance in reference to connecting ancestral lineage to a Choctaw on the final Dawes Rolls.

How to Apply

Applicants must provide a family pedigree chart with the names of ancestors, including information such as birth, marriage, and death information, for complete verification. This can be completed by reviewing the attached brochures, watching the helpful videos, researching the online Dawes Rolls, and completing the downloadable, printer-friendly family pedigree chart. Once the pedigree chart is completed, the chart can be sent to the Choctaw Nation Genealogy Program.

Additional Information

Applications for the Dawes Rolls were accepted between 1898 and 1906 from tribal members residing within the tribal territory, which is now southeastern Oklahoma. You must be a descendant of someone enrolled with a blood quantum by the Dawes Commission to provide tribal heritage.

A family pedigree chart is available through many online genealogical websites to document ancestor information. Additional resources provided in the Resources & Downloads section, including program brochures, are also helpful in learning how to do your own family pedigree chart.

The Genealogy Department advises where to look for records with information needed to search the Dawes Roll.
