The Choctaw Nation’s School of Choctaw Language continues to expand opportunities for people of all ages and experience levels to begin or continue their language-learning journey. Our goal is simple: make learning Choctaw accessible, convenient, engaging, and meaningful.

To bring the Chahta language to more people, Choctaw Nation has been working with Rosetta Stone to bring Choctaw language learning right to your fingertips. With the new Choctaw language course on the Rosetta Stone app, you can learn Choctaw at your pace regardless of age or proficiency level.

The Rosetta Stone app is free and ready for you to take it out for a spin. Simply go online to the Chahta Achvffa portal, create a log in, download the app and begin your learning experience. I am excited to see where this new Rosetta Stone Choctaw learning tool takes our tribe. We believe this tool will lead to more Chahta language speakers.

Today, our Language Department is reaching hundreds of young Chahta through our Head Start and Childcare centers, where approximately 800 children are currently learning the language. For the 2026–27 school year, we are also serving nearly 800 high school students across 43 high schools throughout the Choctaw Nation reservation.

Perhaps the most promising development in our language revitalization efforts is our Apprentice program and our recently established Master Apprentice program. Through the Apprentice program, 30 candidates have the opportunity to be paid while dedicating a minimum of 12 months to learning the Choctaw language. The top 12 apprentices, based on assessments and attendance, have the opportunity to continue into a second year as Master Apprentices. Those who continue to progress in their development can move forward in the Master Apprenticeship.

This program produces results. To date, 69 people have graduated from the Apprentice program as conversational Choctaw speakers. That number represents more than 69 graduates. It represents 69 people who can help carry our language forward. Every summer, we open applications for interested candidates, with the new cohort beginning at the end of September. On Sept. 18, we will celebrate 25 Level 1 Apprentices, eight Level 2 Master Apprentices and two Teachers.
