Environmental Compliance and Recycling

Assures the tribe is in compliance with environmental laws and regulations. Recycling is a service offered to all interested individuals, groups, or businesses. The two facilities located in Durant and Poteau are open to the public Monday through Friday.

Programs

The Environmental Compliance Review program is composed of both comprehensive and specific inspections of all the different facilities that are owned or operated by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO). Every facility is reviewed at least once per year and some multiple times per year based on priority. Findings from reviews are tracked and resolved as they are discovered. Below is a list of some of the inspection types.

  • Environmental Compliance Review
    • Comprehensive review that covers aspects of waste management, chemical management, and environmental permitting
  • Underground Storage Tank Review
    • Underground storage tanks inspection program specific to CNO facilities that store fuel in underground storage tanks
  • Aboveground Storage Tank / Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Review
    • Aboveground storage tank inspection program that is specific to CNO facilities that store fuel in aboveground tanks
  • Waste Manifest review
    • Inspection program that looks at all CNO facilities that generate hazardous/regulated waste to ensure that proper documentation is being maintained in accordance with applicable laws
  • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan Review
    • Inspection program that looks at active CNO construction projects that disturb more than an acre of ground to ensure that best management practices are in place to prevent stormwater runoff pollution from leaving the site

The Environmental Training Program creates and conducts customized hands-on and virtual trainings to help associates protect the environment and stay compliant with environmental regulations. The training team also creates outreach material to inform the community on a wide variety of topics such as recycling, wildlife, and environmental sustainability information. Identify, inventory, rank, and consider for possible cleanup all open dump sites in the Choctaw Reservation. High priority sites can be cleaned up after the sites are evaluated and ranked.
