Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program (SANE)

A specialized service that provides compassionate and expert care to individuals who have experienced sexual assault or abuse.

Additional Information

SANE programs are staffed by registered nurses who have undergone extensive training and certification to provide a comprehensive, victim-centered response to sexual violence.

The services provided by a SANE program include medical forensic examinations, crisis intervention, and referrals to advocacy and support services. A SANE program aims to ensure that individuals who have experienced sexual assault or abuse receive timely and appropriate care while collecting necessary evidence for criminal investigations.

Choctaw Nation SANE nurses are the patient’s advocates and provide services to adults and adolescents, regardless of nationality or residence.

It is critical to come in as quickly as possible after the assault. If treated within 72 hours, they will administer antibiotics to prevent STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). In some cases, they can help the patient up to 120 hours after the assault. Although the police department usually refers victims to the department, the nurses will call the police and refer them to other departments or agencies to get the victims the help they need.
