Virginia Marshall nee Leflore

Born April 24, 1898 at Leflore, Indian Territory. Died March 28, 1978 at Talihina, Oklahoma. Married Nat Marshall (born 1889-died 1945) in 1919. Virginia Leflore Marshall was my grandmother and, needless to say, it would take another book filled with anecdotes to tell all about her life. Simply put; she was a good wife to her husband, a caring mother to her children, and a friend to all who knew her. Virginia grew up at Leflore community in Indian Territory (later the state of Oklahoma), where the family had been settled since the 1840’s. She attended schools at LeFlore; Tushkahoma Female Academy, Tuskahoma, Oklahoma; Haskell Institute, Lawrence, Kansas; and a business school in fort Smith, Arkansas. She married Nat Marshall of Hartshorne, Oklahoma in 1919, and shortly after established a home in Tuskahoma where granddad had opened a bank and was busy with farming and ranching enterprises. About 1922, the family moved to Talihina and has resided here since that time. Over the years, Virginia had five children: Nat, Jr., Charlie Leflore, Virginia Eve, Jimmy Gene, and Willie Jon. Nat, Jr. Married Evelyn Shuler of Poteau, Oklahoma. Two children: Nat Sam Marshall and Linda Kay Marshall. Sam married Joyce Hokit of Wilburton and had two children: Natalie Brooke (Parrington) and Nat Jeffery Marshall. Linda married Daniel Bradford Holland of Talihina and had three children: Patricia Lynn (Fry), William Brian, and Virginia Elizabeth Holland. Charlie Leflore married Ruth Lorene Cox of Wapanucka, Oklahoma. Two children: Michael LeFlore and Patrick Ted Marshall. Michael married Lucinda Cornish and had three daughters: Amy LeFlore, Aubry Ann, and Erin Avery Marshall. Patrick died as a child as a result of complications of measles. Virginia Eve married Charles Brogan. They had no children. Jimmy Gene married Wilene Dyson of Winter Park, Florida. Three children: Gene Vance, Jon Allen, and Gale Rae Marshall. Gene married Cathy?? And had one son: Vance Marshall. Jon Allen married Roxie ?? and had three children: Jared, Lindsay, and Lacey. Gale married ?? and they had no children. Willie Jon married and lives in Florida. He has no children. Following the death of my Granddad Marshall in 1945, Virginia was appointed as tag agent in Talihina and maintained that position until her retirement in the early 1970’s. Also, she served as a State Farm Insurance agent during a time when few women were allowed to work as agents for the company. (It seems strange calling the State Farm office in Talihina now because the current phone number was her home phone number for many years during my childhood.) She was a member of the Church of Christ in Talihina, and the Order of the eastern Star, VFW and American Legion Auxiliary, and the Red Cross Auxiliary.
