Jeff Hickman Submitted by: Stella Hickman Thornburg

My father was an original enrollee from Mississippi. He was born 09-03-1886 in Plattsburg, Mississippi. He had a brother named Ernest Hickman who died not long after they came to Indian Territory in early

  1. His parents, Cornelius and Liza Sockey Hickman. The story he told me was they all came in boxcars with a lot more Indian people from Mississippi to Ft. Smith, Arkansas. They walked to Skullyville, Indian Territory by Spiro and after the Indian agent found land allotment for them, they walked to LeFlore, Indian Territory. Their land was located between Summerfield and LeFlore. My dad’s 160 acres had a house on it so they lived there until they built one. My grandpa Cornelius’s land was near the Cedar Creek Road, along Frisco railroad tracks. It’s a few miles from LeFlore. After they settled, my dad was sent to Jones Academy, at Hartshorne for school. He said he didn’t like it there so he’d run off and hide in the corn files down by the highway until dark then he’d start walking to LeFlore where his mom and dad lived. Sometimes he’d make it home before they missed him. Hid dad would take him back to school. I believe he finally finished school there. I don’t know if Uncle Ernest ever went there before he died or not. My dad said living conditions were terrible. They had head live and bed bugs so bad they couldn’t sleep at night. He never talked about his family so I didn’t find out much. My grandpa and grandma died not many years after moving here. They are buried at the Hickman and Sam Cemetery near LeFlore. Soffey Sam donated the land where the cemetery is. It was almost destroyed years ago. No one ever keeps it up anymore. My dad died in 1969 and is buried over at LeFlore Cemetery. My mother was killed in a car wreck in California in 1967, along with my oldest sister. There are three of us girl’s left and we all live in LeFlore County. My great grandfather’s parent’s names were: His father was Fo-Lem-Cha-Le and his mother was Fa-La-Mat-Eoma. I don’t know what these names are in English. Who changed those names to Hickman??
