Vera B. Shelton passed away April 27, 2006. She was born May 31, 1919, to Sarah Evaline Oakes and Lewis Bevan. She was a lifelong resident of Choctaw County and a member of First Baptist Church, Hugo.
She began working for the Indian Health Services in 1958 and for 26 years took great pride in helping those who came to the clinic. She was particularly knowledgeable about her Choctaw ancestry, enjoying genealogy, planning reunions and sharing history with others.
While oil painting and gardening were hobbies, her excellent cooking skills endeared her to her family, even drawing her into catering for a while. She was very active until a recent period of declining health.
Her husband, George A. Shelton Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughters, Ava and husband Craig Terry of Southlake, Texas, and Pat and husband David Johnson of Bethany; her son, Dr. George A. Shelton and wife Patti of Norman; three grandchildren, Mark Johnson, Lt. Col. Gregg Shelton and Dana Floyd, as well as several extended grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Lillie Bowman, Myrtle Bevan and Hazel Platten; and brother, Louis Bevan.
