Thomas Edwin Oakes Sr. passed away November 21, 2005. He was born January 23, 1919, in Soper to Edgar Omega and Annie Marie Rives Oakes.

He lived in Choctaw County until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps after high school graduation. This began his 25-year career in the Air Force which took him to Texas, Italy, Florida, Japan and California. After the Air Force he continued working with the federal government for 15 more years.

He married Mary Lucille McWaters in 1943 and remained married to her until her death in 2003. They had a son, Thomas Jr., and a daughter, Linda Nell. In 2002, they moved to a senior apartment in Minnesota near their daughter.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edgar and Jack; sister, Nadine Hamby Petty; and an infant sister.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda, and son, Thomas Jr. and wife, Nila; grandsons, Daniel and Christopher Oakes; one brother, Robert Oakes and wife, Connie, of Decatur; three sisters, Wilma Hammond, Edna Montgomery Loftin and Betty Lyles and husband, Roy, of Hugo; and several nieces and nephews.
