Bill Nelson, 68, of the Longtown, Oklahoma community passed away Saturday, January 13, 2001 at his home. Born June 17, 1932 in Hartshorne, Oklahoma, he was the son of Isaac Jacob Nelson and Elizabeth Sumpter Nelson.

He lived most of his life in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma and married Laryl Erickson on February 8, 1958 in Reno, Nevada.

B.J. retired from the Oklahoma Department of Veteran’s Affairs and was a carpenter and journeyman cabinetmaker. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a lifetime member of VFW and Dav.

He was a member of the Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Longtown. He attended both jones Academy and Chilloco Indian Schools. The son of an original enrollee, he was very proud of his Choctaw heritage. He was active in the Choctaw-Chickasaw Alliance and took part in many Choctaw activites.

Survivors include his wife, Laryl Nelson of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Geneva and Terry Dickens of Springfield, Missouri; one son and daughter-in-law, Erika and Carmen Nelson of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren, Billy and Johnny Dickens and Christopher, Matthew, Andrew and Katherine Nelson; brother, J.B. Pete” Nelson of Hartshorne; sisters and brothers-in-law Trude and David McNair of Poteau Oklahoma Maudell and Jentry Allan Southard Jentry Allan Southard and Alvine; nephew Paul Paulson and his wife Susie; niece Jackie Mayo and husband Gene and their daughters Cynthia and Melissa; nieces Mary Lail of Sulphur Oklahoma and Betty Mezie of San Pablo California as well as many other nieces and nephews.
