Velma Williams Baker, 82, passed away February 27, 2004, in Fresno, California, surrounded by 23 loving members of her family. She was born November 13, 1921, in Albion, Oklahoma, the daughter of Dave and Abbie Williams. She was a member of New Harvest Church of Fresno.

Velma started first grade in Albion and graduated high school from there as well. She attended college at Durant, Oklahoma, for two years. With World War II starting, they asked her to return to Albion to teach and coach girls’ basketball.

She met and married a soldier boy, Earl Baker of Vanoss, Oklahoma. When their first son, Don, was six months old, they moved to Exeter, California. She taught in Lindcove, a small town outside of Exeter, where several of her nieces and nephews were in her class. They moved to Fresno, where she continued teaching and attending Fresno State University to complete her education. She accomplished all of this, as well as being a mother to two young sons.
