Buried information...

posted on August 2, 2010

Searching for family history that was buried with my great grandfather. The mother of my grandfather was Dana Love Russell, who was raised on one of the Choctaw reservations. She died when my grandfather was sixteen, and my great grandfather (Mark Dearman) would only tell the family that there were things better left forgotten. I would like very much to find out what I can about my family and connect with family members that I may still have out there. If you have any information that could help me, please contact me here. I have four children who would be very interested in this information as well. Thank you.

Texas Death Index, 1903-2000
about Dana Dearman
Name: Dana Dearman
Death Date: 18 Nov 1940
Death County: Gregg
Certificate: 50457

Where to Go From Here:

With the information provided in this index, you may be able to obtain a copy of a death certificate. Because more information is often provided in an original record than in its index, it is important that you obtain a copy of the original record, if possible. For information on how to order a copy of a death certificate, visit the Texas Department of State Health Services website (www.tdh.state.tx.us) or write to:

Texas Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics
P. O. Box 12040
Austin, TX 78711-2040
(512) 458-7111

genealogists use names, dates, locations, children and spouses to match records. if you have a common surname, you need to give more information rather thann less. if you post about women, it is helpful to include the maiden name and the married name and designate which one is the maiden name.

first of all, heritage and tribal enrollment are two different things. many times natives didn’t apply for enrollment because 1) they didn’t qualify, 2) they were philosophically opposed to enrollment, 3) they didn’t have documentation, or 4) they were mississippi choctaw and their ancestor had accepted land or benefits in lieu of tribal enrollment.

the dawes roll was taken 1896-1906, so you should trace your ancestors down to that time period. mostly, they had to be living in oklahoma by that time and agree to live there permanently.

if the name is common, you may find too many possible records.

the tribe has an excellent information to help you. it is found under genealogy advocacy.

i have collected many resources over the years. if you want to write to me, shamlet76@gmail.com and request the choctaw resource list, i will be glad to send it to you.

i am just a volunteer that wants to empower people to learn how to do genealogy.

Yes! This is my family!! This is more information than any of us knew. I only knew the approximate date of Mark Dearman’s death, nothing on his birth or where he had lived, and all of the information I had on Dana was what I posted. This is a great help! Thank you very much.

this might be your mark dearman:

Social Security Death Index
about Mark Dearman
Name: Mark Dearman
SSN: 452-03-9910
Last Residence: 79756 Monahans, Ward, Texas, United States of America
Born: 6 Oct 1903
Died: Dec 1985
State (Year) SSN issued: Texas (Before 1951)

with your dana dearman, you could get a copy of her social security application, which would list significant dates and places, her parents. see social security administration for that. anyone who passed away after 1/1/1937 has a social security application on file. and in order to prove age at the time they applied, she probably submitted a delayed birth certificate, which would likely include affidavits from other members of the family.
so if you ask for a birth certificate, be sure to ask for a delayed birth certificate copy as well. some vital records offices don’t check for a delayed birth certificate when they check for records.

I have learned that my mother’s father is a Choctaw. She was born May 21, 1919, as Lillian Russell. Her mother was Dana Love Russell and at that time lived in Wichita CO TX and/or Ada OK with her mother, Mary Russell. It is said that she (Dana Russell) lived for a time on a Choctaw reservation. Mother was later adopted and raised by my grandfather, Mark Dearman, as his own, but now that I know the truth, I HAVE to know the name of my CHOCTAW GRANDFATHER! If this resignates with anyone out there, please post or contact me immediately. Evidently, my grandmother did not marry this man but later married Mark Dearman. Dana’s brothers and sisters were Cecil, Ratch, Frank, and Susie Russell.
