poteet appears to be largely a french surname. you can search for poteet and surname on google and get a lot of information.
there are some names that are of native origin, but in the 1800’s many natives took surnames of favorite people, places and things. some natives even switched from one surname to another.
so the surname does not have the same significance when you are speaking about native people.
during the 1700’s and 1800’s, many europeans came and settled the eastern states. those that intermarried with natives also gave their surnames.
