what is your goal here.
native languages only became written languages in the mid 1800’s. there were records by the war department 1800-1930 but you may find them unsatisfying. those records are at NARA in various repositories, such as fort worth, TX.

the dawes roll is an index of names of applicants. you should probably get the dawes packet, if you find a relative, as this will contain the census card, enrollment application, supporting documents and maybe testimony. this will give you more information about heritage.

you might find a newspaper mention about heritage through your local public library/interlibrary loan program. state historical societies and state archives have historical newspapers and maybe some vital records.

if you found elizabeth coleman on the dawes roll, who were members of her family? when/where did she pass away? this is a common name, so how do you know it was her name?

these are the elizabeth coleman records on the dawes roll:

of these, some can be eliminated because they were too young.

This is the index of Cherokees, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Creek found on microfilm M1650 obtained from the National Archives in Fort Worth, Texas. If your ancestor was on the 1896 Cherokee Census they probably will NOT be on this index. This is NOT the 1896 CENSUS. It is an index of people who were NOT recognized by the Cherokee Tribe and subsequently made application to be considered for citizenship.

maybe you think it is this person. i don’t know. you would have to look at the application.

when did elizabeth coleman pass away? do you know where her tombstone is? try findagrave.com or interment.net.

why do you think she would be on the dawes roll? the dawes roll was taken 1896-1906 in indian territory/oklahoma. so far, your posts do not indicate she was living in oklahoma.

is this the 1880 census record?

do you have any other census records for her? she was probably not living on a reservation in 1850-1870.

i’m not seeing much documentation on her husband either. people sometimes were called by nicknames or middle names. this could be a problem.

you should try to find an obituary, cemetery record or death record.

when i am having difficulty finding records, i look at the childrens’ records because they point to the parents, fix a family to a location and date. when you reach back too far, you miss the clues in records.

since she comes from tennessee, she may be more likely cherokee or chickasaw than choctaw.

I just saw your conversation online in a search for my grandmother’s family history. The McBride family you are looking at is my family. I have a picture of Grandma McBride’s headstone. I have only recently started tracing family history.
