In Dawes#750, his wife (Jane Fipps, married to him in 1868), testified that he had had a previous wife who had died. Is there any way of telling who was the previous wife of Albert Forbes, and if there were any children of that marriage?

native records are relatively scarce. maybe the native census records, but they would not show you any maiden names. worse, some might be transliterated native language names.
NARA has the native records that the war department kept. you might find some transcribed on the accessgenealogy website.
