He is originally from McAlester, Oklahoma. Born in the 1940’s. I understand that he was full-blooded Choctaw. He is my birth father.

After a full year and no response and no progress in finding Hank Henry, I’m trying here again with more info. Hank Henry lived in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1967. He and my mom dated while he lived there. I understand that his brother may have played football for Oklahoma State at that time. ANY info or possible leads would be appreciated. Thank you.

this name is common.
was he born in OK?
do you know the name of his brother?
what does it say on your birth certificate?
what was he doing in OH? if he was employed, who was his employer? if he was in school, what school did he go to?

hank is a common nickname for henry.

genealogical tools sometimes find living people. obituaries are useful because they often list names and locations of living relatives.

whitepages.com might help.

one of the problems is that the 1950 census is not yet public. it will be public in 2022. you can contact the census bureau and request that they look in the 1950 census. they might do that for you.

as far as tribal affiliation, there are tribal members and people with a tribal heritage. your post doesn’t indicate whether you think there is a tribal affiliation or a tribal membership.

Thank you Suzanne. I do believe that he is of tribal affiliation. My mom indicated that he was full Choctaw. He was in Cleveland working and going to school. I believe he was working as a bouncer at a bar (Bourbon Street Grill, perhaps?) while pursuing a trade skill (welding?). He is not on my birth certificate because my mom left and went home prior to my birth. She was also in school in Cleveland – attending a secondary school offered to Native Americans. She was 19 and he was 3-5 years older. I believe that he was born in McAlester, however, that is unconfirmed. He did graduate in McAlester. I do not know his brother’s name. Here was not a child support order ever in place. I was adopted by my mother’s husband when I was 5, unbeknownst to Hank. Hank had tried to contact us in approximately 1972 and is aware of my birth. Unfortunately the document with his address and phone number was discarded before I became aware of it. Thank you for all the information you provided but I am hoping that someone will recognize the little bit of information that I do have and make some kind of connection for me. I have tried Ancestry.com, People Finder, etc. Unfortunately without his birth date (April 15 is all I know)or the names of his parents, finding him has been close to impossible it seems. :( I have looked up tax records in Pittsburg County and find many with the last name of Henry but no Arthur Henry.
I will try state vital statistics for his birth certificate. Thank you!!

you might try local newspapers for pittsburg county, OK. see your local public library/interlibrary loan for that. in my opinion defining dates to check are the april 15 time period for years in 1940, the possible graduation date, and check sports pages, which often carry high school sports. you should also look at obituaries with the surname of henry.

it is curious why he went to ohio to take welding.

did he have any military experience?

there are many natives that are not enrolled in the choctaw tribe. some natives didn’t want to live under the authority of the tribe or didn’t qualify for enrollment or could not submit the required proof of tribal affiliation. many natives did not live on reservations in the 1830s and descendants of those natives had difficulty proving they were affiliated with the tribe in the enrollment period 1896-1906.

did he attend the same school as your mother? what was the name of it?

As far as I know there is no military experience. He went to school under the same Native American Grant Program as my mom. My mom attended the secretarial school though. I have the name written down but I have since moved so I will need to relocate my notes, everything I’ve relayed to you is from memory at this point. I can ask my mom again but she doesn’t talk about it readily and will not discuss it when my adopted dad is around. :/ I will locate my notes . . .
