Upward Bound Program

This educational program is designed to give to high school students an opportunity to prepare for college life. They will experience college-prep course work, state-of-the-art laboratory work, tutoring, career exploration, intensive academic skills enrichment, motivation, financial aid/scholarship assistance, and numerous field trips intended to prepare them for success in high school and college.

All participants attend an intensive 6 week summer academic program at Eastern Oklahoma State College and will reside in dormitories at Jones Academy. During the academic year the Upward Bound staff visit regularly with students in their home high schools to assist them with educational counseling and guidance. All allowable expenses are paid by the Upward Bound Program.

Eligibility requirements:

  • 2/3rds of participants must be from low-income and first generation families. (Neither parent has a 4-year college degree)
  • 1/3 of participants may meet o­ne of the above requirements.
  • All students must demonstrate academic need and strong potential/interest for successfully completing high school and college.
  • Selected students enrolled in grades 9-12 in specific target schools are served throughout Atoka, Bryan, Pushmataha, Latimer, McCurtain and Pittsburg Counties.

All interested students should contact their high school counselor or the Upward Bound office at the Tribal Complex for an application. The Upward Bound Program is a federally funded program through the U. S. Department of Education.
